Clifford Benson

Clifford Benson (1946–2007) was a British pianist celebrated for his elegant collaborative work and deep affinity for art songs and chamber music. A sought-after accompanist, he partnered with legendary musicians like violinist Rodney Friend and tenor Philip Langridge, bringing sensitivity and clarity to performances of English composers such as Vaughan Williams, Stanford, and Parry—all featured prominently in his discography. His recordings, including the *Stanford: Songs* collections and *Parry: Songs*, showcase his knack for balancing lyrical warmth with structural precision, making him a trusted interpreter of British repertoire.

Benson’s versatility shone in works beyond England, too, from Poulenc’s playful *Flute Sonata* to Respighi and Ravel’s fiery violin sonatas. A live recording enthusiast, his *Concert Live at Nova Hall* captures his spontaneous artistry. Though he passed away in 2007, his legacy lives on through recordings that highlight his understated brilliance
