Jojo Mayer is a Swiss drummer known for his advanced techniques and prowess in a variety of genres, from jazz and funk to drum and bass and electronic music. Born in Zurich on January 18, 1963, Mayer was exposed to music at an early age through his father, a bass player, with whom he began playing traditional Swiss music before discovering rock and jazz. As a prodigy, he performed in public by the age of 2 and began his career as a professional drummer at the tender age of 18. He quickly gained a reputation in the European jazz scene before moving to New York City in the early 1990s, where he immersed himself in the underground music scene, playing with a vast array of artists and dabbling in various genres.
Over the years, Jojo Mayer has become synonymous with technical innovation and a pioneering approach to drumming, particularly with his band NERVE – an outfit that fuses elements of electronica, jazz, and experimental music, known for its high-energy live performances. With their most recent releases such as "Lunar Tribute," "New Moon (Theme From Lunar Tribute)," "After The Flare," and "Ghosts Of Tomorrow," Mayer and NERVE have continued pushing the boundaries of contemporary drumming, incorporating live electronic sequencing and synths into their sound. His educational DVD "Prohibited Beats" is often cited for his exploration of hand techniques and breaking down the complex grooves and patterns of electronic drumming for acoustic players. Through his ongoing exploration and fusion of acoustic and electronic sounds, Jojo Mayer has solidified his role as one of the leading figures in forward-thinking drumming and rhythm technology.
