Phonophani is the experimental electronic music project of Norwegian musician Espen Sommer Eide. Known for his immersive and often otherworldly soundscapes, Phonophani blends acoustic instruments with digital manipulation to create abstract yet organic compositions. Since the late 1990s, Espen has used the Phonophani moniker to explore sonic innovation, often incorporating handmade software instruments into his creative process.
As part of the vital Norwegian label Rune Grammofon, Phonophani has released a string of acclaimed albums including Animal Imagination, Kreken, and Genetic Engineering. His music often straddles the disciplines of visual art, technology, and philosophy—reflecting Espen’s interest in both traditional music and avant-garde experimentation. He’s also one half of the duo Alog, another adventurous project that helped define the sound of Scandinavian experimental electronica in the early 2000s.
