Born in Rome in 1900, he initially studied for the priesthood before turning his attention to music, training at the Accademia di Santa Cecilia. He made his operatic debut in the 1920s and quickly gained a reputation as one of the finest comic basses of his time. Baccaloni was particularly celebrated for his performances in operas by Mozart, Donizetti, and Rossini, where his rich voice and natural comic timing made him a standout on both European and American stages.

He was a frequent collaborator with leading conductors and singers of the 20th century. Beyond opera, Baccaloni also made appearances in film and television, bringing his larger-than-life personality to broader audiences.
