He is known for his work as a singer, songwriter, cavaquinist, and violonist, specializing in the samba genre. Maurílio is the founder of the Comunidade Samba da Vela and is part of the duo Prettos, alongside his brother Magnu Sousá. He began his musical journey at a young age, influenced by his family's musical background. His father, Gilberto Xique-Xique, was a musician who worked with notable artists like Baden Powell. Maurílio also co-founded the Quinteto em Branco e Preto, a group highly regarded in the Brazilian samba scene.
