John Danyel

John Danyel (c. 1564–1626) was an English Renaissance composer and lutenist, best known for his intricate lute songs that blended poetic lyricism with rich harmonies. A younger brother of poet Samuel Daniel, he carved his niche in the early 17th-century English ayre tradition alongside giants like John Dowland. His 1606 collection of lute songs, including gems like *Grief Keep Within* and *Time Stands Still*, showcased his knack for pairing melancholic texts with delicate, expressive lute accompaniments. Though less prolific than Dowland, Danyel’s work is celebrated for its emotional depth and technical sophistication, often drawing comparisons to the introspective style of his contemporaries. His music, revived in modern recordings like *Awake, Sweet Love* and *Time Stands Still: Lute Songs by Dowland & His Contemporaries*, remains a favorite among early music enthusiasts for its intimate, haunting beauty.
