Domenico Zipoli was an Italian Baroque composer and Jesuit missionary, born in 1688 in Prato, Italy. He studied music in Florence and later in Rome under the tutelage of prominent composers like Bernardo Pasquini and Alessandro Scarlatti. Zipoli became known for his keyboard works, including his Sonate d'intavolatura per organo e cimbalo, which remain popular with organists and harpsichordists today for their lyrical style and expressive clarity.
In 1717, Zipoli made a remarkable turn in his career by joining the Society of Jesus and traveling to South America as a missionary. He settled in the Jesuit missions of Paraguay (now part of Argentina), where he continued to compose and teach music, contributing significantly to the cultural life of the region. Despite the challenges of life in the New World, Zipoli's music flourished, blending European Baroque traditions with the local context. He died in 1726, but his works endured and were rediscovered in the 20th century, showcasing his unique role as a bridge between European and Latin American musical traditions.
