Light of the World is a heralded British funk and jazz band that emerged from the vibrant late '70s London music scene, part of a wave of new energetic acts that combined elements of jazz, funk, and soul. Taking their name from the title of a 1974 Kool & The Gang album, Light of the World was initially formed by bassist, Paul "Tubbs" Williams and guitarist, Jean-Paul "Bluey" Maunick—later the mastermind behind Incognito—along with other musicians.
Their sound was characterized by robust brass arrangements, groovy bass lines, and a rhythmic underpinning that drew from the period’s prevalent spirit of jazz-funk fusion. The group achieved modest success in the UK with several charted albums and singles such as "Swingin'," "Midnight Groovin'," and "Time." While their mainstream fame may have been fleeting, they garnered a loyal following and have been cited as a seminal influence in the British jazz-funk movement. With their 1980 album "Round Trip" being a standout in their discography, the band evolved and various members pursued side projects, but they have continued to perform and record sporadically into the 21st century, appreciated by new generations for their lively performances and their enduring contributions to the genre. Their recent live recordings and remixes like "Black Gold (Live)" and "Summer Girl (Remixes)" showcase their ability to adapt and deliver their distinct style to contemporary audiences.
