Sylvia Plath was an American poet, novelist, and short story writer. She is best known for her confessional poetry, which explored themes of love, loss, and mental illness. Plath's work has been praised for its honesty, intensity, and dark humor. She is considered one of the most important poets of the 20th century.
Plath was born in Boston in 1932. She began writing poetry at a young age and published her first poem in a national magazine when she was just 17. She attended Smith College and Cambridge University, where she met her future husband, the poet Ted Hughes. Plath and Hughes married in 1956 and had two children. The couple lived in England for several years before returning to the United States in 1962. Plath's mental health deteriorated after the birth of her second child, and she was hospitalized for depression. In 1963, she committed suicide at the age of 30.
