Yakov Kreizberg was an esteemed symphony and opera conductor known for his dynamic interpretations and intellectual approach to a diverse range of repertoires. Born on October 24, 1959, in Leningrad (now St. Petersburg), Russia, he demonstrated an early affinity for music and pursued conducting studies at the Leningrad Conservatory. In 1976, Kreizberg emigrated to the United States, where he continued his education at the Mannes College of Music and the University of Michigan.
His international career began to flourish in the late 1980s when he started garnering acclaim in Europe. With an impressive command over both symphonic and operatic literature, Kreizberg served as the Principal Conductor of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and as the Artistic Director and Chief Conductor of the Vienna Symphony. His interpretative finesse and attention to musical detail won him widespread admiration. Throughout his career, Kreizberg's discography expanded with each release celebrated for its insightful performance. Notable recordings include works by Shostakovich, Dvorak, Ravel, Debussy, and Rimsky-Korsakov. Tragically, Yakov Kreizberg's career was cut short when he passed away on March 15, 2011.
