John Robertson

John Robertson is a New Zealand-born Canadian composer, born on October 21, 1943, in Auckland. He initially pursued a career in the insurance industry after emigrating to Canada in 1967. However, in the mid-1970s, he began private studies in composition and counterpoint at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto with Dr. Sam Dolin. His entry in the 1987 Composer's Competition led to his first major public performance with the Variations for small orchestra Op 14. Since then, his music has been performed in several countries, including Canada, Australia, Mexico, the UK, Sweden, and Bulgaria. Notably, the Ruse State Opera commissioned an opera from him, titled *Orpheus*, which premiered in 2015 and was revived multiple times.

John Robertson's compositions span a wide range of genres, including symphonies, concertos, and choral works. His symphonies have been well-received, with five of his six symphonies recorded and released on Navona Records. Recent releases include *Symphonies Nos. 4 & 5* and *Vallarta Suite, Op. 47*. His music is praised for its beauty and accessibility, blending technical sophistication with timeless appeal.
