Esmeray

Esmeray Diriker, known mononymously as Esmeray, was a distinguished Turkish singer and actress who gained prominence in the 1970s. Born on June 20, 1949, in Istanbul, she was of African descent through her father's lineage, and this aspect of her heritage was a rarity in the Turkish music industry at the time, which gave her a distinct position. Esmeray's music career took off after her participation in the 1975 Eurovision Song Contest, where she represented Turkey with the song "Unutama Beni," securing her place in the hearts of Turkish music fans.

Her expressive voice and unique style allowed Esmeray to seamlessly blend elements of pop, folk, and even Anatolian rock in her music. Some of her most notable songs include "Gel Tezkere Gel," a poignant piece that alludes to military service and the longing for one's beloved, as well as "Garip Anam," which translates to "My Poor Mother." These songs not only highlight her vocal prowess but also her ability to convey deep and resonant themes related to love, social issues, and familial ties. Although her life was cut short by cancer on April 12, 2002, Esmeray's legacy endures through her music, including collections like "En İyileriyle Esmeray," which showcases her best works and continues to capture the hearts of new and old fans alike.
