David Shire is an accomplished American composer best known for his work in film, television, and musical theatre. A graduate of Yale University, Shire has had a diverse and prolific career, creating music for iconic films such as The Conversation (1974), The Taking of Pelham One Two Three (1974), All the President’s Men (1976), and Return to Oz (1985). His score for Norma Rae (1979) won the Academy Award for Best Original Song for "It Goes Like It Goes."
In addition to his film and TV work, Shire has made significant contributions to the stage. Alongside lyricist Richard Maltby Jr., he co-wrote the beloved musical revue Closer Than Ever and the Off-Broadway show Baby. Known for his versatility and emotional depth, Shire’s music has remained a favorite among fans of thoughtful, character-driven storytelling.
