Madurai Somasundaram

Madurai S. Somasundaram, affectionately known as "Madurai Somu," was a renowned Carnatic music vocalist. Born on February 9, 1919, in Swamimalai, he was originally named S. Paramasivam. Somasundaram's music career began with a concert in Tiruchendur in 1934. He was trained by notable musicians such as Sesha Bhagavatar, Abhirama Sastri, and Chittoor Subramaniam Pillai. His contributions to music earned him prestigious awards like the Padma Shri in 1976 and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1978. He was an ardent devotee of Lord Muruga, often incorporating devotional elements into his performances.

Somasundaram's legacy extended beyond his religious affiliations, as he was a beloved figure in Carnatic music, celebrated for his captivating concerts and recordings.
