Speedy West

Speedy West, born Wesley Webb West on January 25, 1924, in Springfield, Missouri, was an American steel guitar virtuoso whose innovative style helped shape the sound of country and Western music in the 1940s and 1950s. Known for his lightning-fast playing and creative use of the pedal steel guitar, West became an in-demand session musician in the burgeoning country music scene of post-war Los Angeles. His collaborations with guitarist Jimmy Bryant are particularly renowned, with the pair pushing the boundaries of country instrumental music.

Over the course of his career, West released a series of influential albums that showcased his virtuosity and inventive approach to the steel guitar. Albums such as "Guitar Spectacular" and "2 Guitars Country Style" were clear demonstrations of his technical skill and his ability to blend genres. His album "West of Hawaii" brought an exotic tinge to his country roots, displaying his versatility and willingness to experiment with different sounds. "Steel Guitar," another well-received album, solidified his reputation as one of the instrument's foremost players. Speedy West passed away on November 15, 2003, leaving behind a legacy of groundbreaking work that continues to inspire steel guitarists around the world.
