Johnny & Orquesta Rodrigues is a musical project that gained significant popularity in the 1970s. The name "Johnny & Orquesta Rodrigues" was used for releases, although there was no actual orchestra involved; the music was performed by members of the Tee-Set band. The project's most notable success came with the single "Hey Mal Yo," which reached number one in the Netherlands and Belgium in 1975. This song was an arrangement of the traditional Portuguese folk tune "O Malhão" and became a massive hit across Europe. Following this success, Johnny Rodrigues released other singles like "Hasibaba" and "Uma Casa Portuguesa," though they did not achieve the same level of fame as "Hey Mal Yo." Johnny Rodrigues, born João Rodrigues, was a Cape Verdean singer who initially moved to the U.S. before his music career took off during a visit to the Netherlands. He passed away in 2001 in Cape Verde.
