Mamonas Assassinas was a Brazilian rock band known for their irreverent, humorous songs and theatrical performances. Formed in 1989 under the name Utopia, the band originally played more conventional rock music. However, it wasn't until 1994, after they reinvented themselves and adopted the name Mamonas Assassinas, that they achieved massive national fame. The band consisted of vocalist Dinho (Alecsander Alves), guitarist Bento Hinoto (Alberto Hinoto), bassist Samuel Reoli (Samuel Reis de Oliveira), his brother and keyboardist Júlio Rasec (Júlio César), and drummer Sérgio Reoli (Sérgio Reis de Oliveira).
Mamonas Assassinas' eponymous album, released in 1995, became a sensational hit in Brazil, quickly reaching diamond status with over 3 million copies sold. Their music, a mix of rock with influences from other genres such as sertanejo, forró, brega, and even pagode, along with comedic lyrics, resonated with audiences all over the country. Hits like "Pelados Em Santos," "Vira-Vira," and "Robocop Gay" became anthems for a generation. Tragically, their skyrocketing career was cut short on March 2, 1996, when the band's plane crashed into the Cantareira mountain range near São Paulo, killing all on board. The band's only studio album, therefore, also became their last, sealing their legacy as an enduring icon in the annals of Brazilian music. Despite their brief career, Mamonas Assassinas left an indelible impact on Brazilian pop culture, remembered for their infectious energy and playful spirit.
