Paolo Washington

Paolo Washington was a distinguished bass singer who made a significant impact in the world of opera, particularly in Italy and the United States. He began his professional career at the Teatro Comunale in Florence in 1958 and went on to perform at prestigious venues like La Scala in Milan, Rome, and Naples. His operatic range was broad, covering works by Donizetti, Bellini, Verdi, and Stravinsky, among others. Washington was especially admired for his emotional performances as Colline in *La Bohème* and Timur in *Turandot*. In the U.S., his main association was with the Lyric Opera of Chicago, where from 1968 to 1997 he appeared in 14 roles across 101 performances, a testament to his versatility and staying power. He also performed internationally in cities across Europe and at major festivals such as Salzburg and Bregenz. Notably, he appeared twice at the Metropolitan Opera, including the title role in *Don Pasquale* in 1979. Paolo Washington passed away in 2008 at the age of 75.
