Born in Alto Belo, Minas Gerais, he comes from a family deeply rooted in traditional music and folklore. His father, Teófilo Izidoro de Azevedo, was a legendary violeiro and repentista, inspiring Téo's early involvement in music. Téo Azevedo's career spans decades, with notable achievements including being named the Best Mineiro Composer of the Year in 1968 and winning the First Festival of Sertaneja Music in 1978 with the song "Ternos pingos da saudade." He has released numerous albums, showcasing a variety of traditional Brazilian genres such as calango and repente, and has collaborated with other prominent artists.

Téo Azevedo is also recognized for his contributions to literature, having published several books on folk culture and medicine. His music often reflects the rich cultural heritage of the north of Minas Gerais, and he has been featured in various television programs and festivals. In 2003, he released the album "Brasil com 'S' – vol. 1," which won a Grammy Latino Award for Best Roots Album.
