Apollo Ntabanyane

Apollo Ntabanyane, also known as Mohlomi 'Apollo' Ntabanyane, is a legendary musician from Lesotho who has been a pioneer in the Famo music genre. Born on May 10, 1942, in Matšekheng, Berea district, Apollo began his musical journey by playing traditional instruments like the sekhankula while herding animals. He later moved to South Africa to work in the mines but soon focused on music, forming the group Tau ea Matšekha with his cousin Forere Motloheloa. They were the first to produce an album of Famo music, which initially was a dance performed by women in private settings but later became popular in public. Apollo's powerful voice earned him his nickname, inspired by the Apollo 11 moon landing. He has released numerous albums and has collaborated with many artists, including international figures like Oliver Mtukudzi and Hugh Masekela.

Throughout his career spanning over four decades, Apollo has received numerous awards for his contributions to Basotho culture and music. He was named the King of Famo music by the late Queen 'Mamohato Bereng Seeiso and has been recognized by King Moshoeshoe II and King Letsie III for his cultural contributions. Apollo continues to perform and inspire new generations of musicians, maintaining his unique stage presence with his signature horse tail blanket. Despite his extensive career, he remains passionate about music and continues to entertain audiences with his talent.
