Rohan Krishnamurthy is an acclaimed Indian-American percussionist, composer, and educator, best known for his dynamic performances on the mridangam, a classical South Indian drum. Trained from a young age by mridangam maestro Guruvayur Dorai, Rohan has brought a fresh, global perspective to traditional Carnatic rhythms, frequently collaborating with a wide range of artists across genres like jazz, blues, and world music. In addition to leading innovative projects like The Alaya Project, he’s also performed around the world at prestigious venues and festivals, continually pushing the boundaries of cross-cultural musical dialogue.
Beyond performing, Rohan is committed to education and outreach — he's presented lectures and workshops at major institutions and is passionate about promoting rhythmic literacy. With a background in both music and science, including a Ph.D. in Musicology/Ethnomusicology from the Eastman School of Music, Rohan fuses technical mastery with a spirit of innovation, making him a distinctive and inspiring figure in contemporary global music.
