Wilhelm Fitzenhagen

Wilhelm Fitzenhagen was a German cellist, composer, and teacher who lived in the 19th century, best known for his contributions to cello repertoire and his involvement in the Russian classical music scene. Born in 1848, he studied in Germany before moving to Moscow, where he became a prominent cello professor at the Moscow Conservatory. Fitzenhagen had a strong relationship with fellow composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, even premiering and editing Tchaikovsky’s "Rococo Variations"—a move that sparked both praise and controversy in classical music circles.

As a composer, Fitzenhagen wrote primarily for the cello, showcasing both lyrical expressiveness and technical brilliance in works like his Concert Waltz in D major, Op. 31, and various character pieces and concertos. While his music was somewhat overshadowed by his contemporaries, recent recordings and performances have reignited interest in his work, offering a glimpse into the rich Romantic cello tradition he helped shape.
