Souls of Mischief is an American hip hop group from Oakland, California, part of the hip hop collective Hieroglyphics. Formed in 1991, the group is composed of emcees A-Plus, Opio, Phesto, and Tajai. Renowned for their contribution to the development of the alternative and underground hip hop scene during the early to mid-'90s, Souls of Mischief gained critical acclaim for their debut album, "93 'til Infinity", released in 1993. The title track of the album became an emblematic anthem of the genre, revered for its smooth production and clever lyricism.
Over the years, Souls of Mischief continued to evolve their sound and maintain their status within the hip hop community with a string of releases. They returned in 2009 with the album "Montezuma's Revenge", produced by the legendary hip hop producer Prince Paul. In recent years, the group explored creative collaborations such as the concept album "There Is Only Now" released in 2014, which was a collaboration with composer and multi-instrumentalist Adrian Younge. This project, along with its accompanying remixes, showcased the group's ability to reinvent themselves while still staying true to their roots in the cultural landscape of hip hop. Despite the changes in the music industry and the evolution of hip hop, Souls of Mischief have preserved their distinct sound and continue to influence new generations of hip hop artists.
