Cousin Mouth is an experimental duo known for their eclectic blend of genres, including neo-soul, experimental electronica, ambient, and R&B. The duo moved into the vibrant artistic community at Assemble Sound in Detroit's Corktown, where they collaborated with producer Eddie Logix on their debut album, *Medusa*. This album featured a mix of dulcet tones, spacey R&B, and melodic ambient sounds, showcasing influences from artists like James Blake, Joni Mitchell, D'Angelo, and Todd Rundgren. The creative process is characterized by openness and collaboration, with neither member bringing fully formed songs to the table.
In their subsequent work, Cousin Mouth continued to evolve and expand their sound, with a focus on translating solo compositions for a larger live ensemble. This included experimenting with drums, bass, keys, background vocalists, and even sax or flute, marking a significant growth in their role as bandleaders and songwriters. The aim is to convey honest, relatable human experiences through their music, emphasizing the genuine emotional connections listeners can make with their songs.
