Skint & Demoralised

Skint & Demoralised are a British indie-poetry project fronted by Wakefield-born wordsmith Matt Abbott, blending sharp social commentary with catchy indie-pop hooks. Formed in 2008 after Abbott’s spoken-word performances caught attention online, the project gained traction with their 2009 debut *Love, and Other Catastrophes*, produced by MiNI dOG (Arctic Monkeys, Roots Manuva). Known for Abbott’s Yorkshire-accented storytelling and observations on working-class life, their music fuses witty lyricism with jangly guitars and Northern soul influences. After a hiatus, they returned in 2017 with renewed energy, releasing tracks like *#RefugeesWelcome* and *We Are Humans* that tackle modern political issues without losing their kitchen-sink charm. Recent releases like *Boro Kitchen 4AM* and *This Sporting Life* continue their tradition of celebrating everyday grit, while *Superheroes* and *Slim Jim’s Liquor Store* showcase Abbott’s knack for turning pub banter into poetic anthems.
