Newband

**Newband** is a dynamic ensemble dedicated to pushing the boundaries of experimental and microtonal music. Founded in 1977 by composer and instrument builder Dean Drummond (a former student of Harry Partch), the group specializes in performing works that utilize custom-made instruments and unconventional tuning systems. Known for their vibrant interpretations of Harry Partch’s groundbreaking compositions—like *Castor and Pollux* and *The Wayward*—Newband also champions contemporary microtonal pieces by artists such as John Cage, Anne LeBaron, and Drummond himself. Their performances are a wild ride through clangorous textures and otherworldly sounds, often featuring Partch’s iconic instruments like the Cloud-Chamber Bowls and the Zoomoozophone. Over the years, they’ve carved out a niche as both preservationists of Partch’s legacy and fearless explorers of avant-garde sonic landscapes.
