Mission of Burma is a pioneering post-punk band that emerged from the vibrant Boston music scene in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Formed in 1979 by Roger Miller (guitar, vocals), Clint Conley (bass, vocals), Peter Prescott (drums, vocals), and Martin Swope (tape manipulations, sound engineering), the band quickly garnered attention for their intense live performances and innovative sound, which combined punk energy with complex structures and adventurous use of tape loops and noise. Their early releases, including the seminal EP "Signals, Calls, and Marches" and their first full-length album "Vs.," have become cornerstones in the post-punk genre, influencing countless musicians over the decades.
Despite disbanding in 1983 due to Miller's hearing problems, Mission of Burma made a triumphant return in 2002, reuniting with all original members except for Swope, who was replaced by Bob Weston. The band's comeback has been marked by a string of critically acclaimed albums such as "The Obliterati" (2006), "The Sound The Speed The Light" (2009), and "Unsound" (2012), which showcase their continued ability to blend raw power with sophisticated sonic experimentation. Renowned for their relentless pursuit of musical innovation, Mission of Burma remains a vital and influential force in the landscape of alternative rock.
