Sun Ra Arkestra

The Sun Ra Arkestra is an avant-garde music ensemble originally led by the visionary jazz composer, pianist and poet Sun Ra, who claimed to be of extraterrestrial origin from Saturn. The band, known for its innovative music that fused elements of jazz, space music, and Egyptian history, has been one of the seminal groups in the development of free jazz and experimental music since its inception in the mid-20th century. Sun Ra's leadership of the Arkestra was characterized by a unique blend of cosmic philosophy, theatrical performance, and a communal lifestyle, with the ensemble often living and rehearsing together in a shared home.

After Sun Ra left Earthly confines in 1993, the Sun Ra Arkestra continued under the direction of saxophonist Marshall Allen, who had been a member since the 1950s. The group has sustained the legacy of their pioneering leader, touring and recording extensively. Over the years, their evolving sound has continued to push the boundaries of jazz, seen in recent releases like "Swirling," which was marked as a significant return to form when it was released in 2020, and reflective works like "Living Sky." The Arkestra's performances are a spectacular fusion of music and theater, with elaborate costumes and spontaneous improvisation, preserving Sun Ra's unique approach to creativity and his belief in the power of music to transform consciousness.
