The Inmates

The Inmates are a British pub rock band that formed in North London in 1977, known for their raw, energetic blues-infused rock sound that draws heavily from the prototypical American rhythm and blues tradition. The band's classic lineup comprised Bill Hurley on lead vocals, Peter Gunn and Tony Oliver on guitars, Ben Donnelly on bass, and Jim Russell on drums. They first gained recognition with their spirited cover of The Standells' "Dirty Water," which became a hit not just in the UK but also in the United States.

The Inmates' momentum in the late '70s and early '80s was encapsulated in "Dirty Water: The Collection 1979-1982," showcasing the band's early material and energetic live performances. Over the years, their sound has remained rooted in the blues-rock genre, with albums like "Runaway," "Bread & Water," and "Siverio - in the heat of the night" underscoring their consistent dedication to the craft. The dual release of "True Live Stories / Five" reveled in The Inmates' live prowess and studio finesse, showing a band comfortable in both arenas. "Inside out / wanted" and "Live in Paris" further celebrated their enduring stage presence, and "Fast Forward" reflected the band's ability to evolve while honoring their blues-rock roots. Despite line-up changes over the years, The Inmates uphold their reputation as stalwarts of the pub rock scene, with a loyal fan base and a respect for the roots of rock and roll.
