Zain Javadd Malik, known mononymously as ZAYN, is an English singer and songwriter who first rose to fame as a member of the wildly successful boy band One Direction. Born on January 12, 1993, in Bradford, West Yorkshire, he auditioned as a solo contestant for the British music competition show "The X Factor" in 2010. Although he was eliminated as a solo performer, he was brought back to join the group that would become One Direction, which went on to become one of the best-selling boy bands of all time. Following his departure from the group in March 2015, ZAYN embarked on a solo career that has been characterized by a more mature, R&B-influenced sound.
