Nicola Matteis

Nicola Matteis was an Italian Baroque violinist and composer whose work gained considerable recognition in England during the latter part of the 17th century. Born around the mid-17th century in Italy, Matteis ventured to England sometime in the 1670s, where he quickly established himself as a virtuoso violinist and a gifted composer. His exact birth and death dates remain somewhat obscure; however, it is widely acknowledged that his musical talents flourished during his time in London.

Matteis is best known for his volumes titled "Ayres for the Violin," which were published in four parts between 1676 and 1685. These collections showcased his remarkable skill in blending Italian playing techniques with English musical tastes, resulting in a rich, unique sound that distinguished his compositions from those of his contemporaries. His music exhibits a wide emotional range, from the melancholic strains evident in works like "False Consonances of Melancholy" to the bright and lively "Aria Allegra." Matteis' influence on English music was significant, and he is often credited with elevating the status of the violin in England to new heights through his innovative playing style and the expressive qualities of his compositions. Though not as widely celebrated today, Matteis' work remains a crucial part of the Baroque repertoire, as reflected in the steady release of recordings that bring his compositions to life for new generations of listeners.
