Roland Peelman

Roland Peelman is a Belgian-born conductor and musical director who has made significant contributions to the Australian music scene. Born near Ghent, Belgium, Peelman studied in Ghent and later in Cologne, Germany. He emigrated to Australia in 1984 and has since worked with numerous prominent organizations, including Opera Australia, the Australian Chamber Orchestra, and The Song Company, where he served as artistic director from 1990 to 2015. Known for his advocacy of new Australian music, Peelman has been the artistic director of the Canberra International Music Festival since 2015. He has received several accolades for his contributions to music, including being appointed an honorary Member of the Order of Australia in 2020 and winning the APRA AMCOS Art Music Award for National Luminary in 2023.

Peelman's diverse musical interests span from Schumann and Mozart to contemporary and spectral music. He has been involved in various roles, including conducting, directing, and mentoring, and continues to be active in the music scene as a pianist and festival director. His work has been recognized for its innovative approach and dedication to fostering new musical talent.
