Born on July 12, 1940 in Nashville, Tennessee, Walker got his nickname "Wigg" from his mother due to being born with a full head of hair. He began his professional music career in 1959, recording for Ted Jarrett's Champion label in Nashville before moving to New York City.
Throughout his long career, Walker has shared stages with legendary artists like James Brown, Jackie Wilson, Etta James, and Sam Cooke. He's recorded for notable labels including Chess and Decca, and even spent time as a staff writer for Motown in the 1970s.
