Lorenzo Da Ponte was an Italian librettist best known for his legendary collaboration with composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Born in 1749 in what is now part of Italy, Da Ponte provided the librettos for three of Mozart’s most celebrated operas: The Marriage of Figaro (Le nozze di Figaro), Don Giovanni, and Così fan tutte. His sharp wit, poetic flair, and ability to bring complex characters to life helped usher in a new era of opera, blending drama and comedy in groundbreaking ways.
Before teaming up with Mozart, Da Ponte worked with other composers like Antonio Salieri, and after his time in Europe, he made his way to the United States. There, he became a professor and played a pivotal role in introducing Italian opera to American audiences. From Venetian priest to New York professor, Da Ponte lived a life as dramatic as the operas he helped create.
