Mayuko Katakura

Mayuko Katakura is a renowned jazz pianist born in Sendai, Japan, to a family deeply rooted in music. Her journey with the piano began at the age of five, initially focusing on classical music, but later gravitating toward jazz, with Thelonious Monk being a major influence. Mayuko's career took off when she was invited to perform with notable musicians like Bob Zung and Masakiko Osaka while still a student. She later moved to the United States to further pursue her education at Berklee College and the Juilliard Jazz program. Her talents have led her to be selected for prestigious competitions, including the Thelonious Monk competition, and she won the Mary Lou Williams Jazz Competition. As a bandleader, Katakura has released several albums, showcasing her impeccable jazz piano skills.

Mayuko Katakura has collaborated with various artists, including Benjamin Herman and Kiyoshi Kitagawa. Her performances embody a deep jazz spirit and creativity, often blending simplicity with skillful improvisation. Her album *Faith* is notable for its straight-ahead jazz style, reflecting influences from legends like Sonny Clark.
