Victor von Halem was a renowned German operatic bass, born on March 26, 1940, in Berlin, Germany. He spent his childhood in Portugal and Italy before studying singing at the Musikhochschule München under Else Domberger. Von Halem made his stage debut at the Deutsche Oper Berlin in 1965, thanks to a recommendation by conductor Herbert von Karajan, and remained a member of the company for nearly three decades. During his career, he performed a wide repertoire of over 100 roles, including notable parts in operas like *Don Carlo*, *Aida*, and *Die Zauberflöte*. He also sang with prominent opera houses across Europe and North America, such as La Scala and the Opéra National de Paris.
Von Halem was known for his powerful bass voice and was described by critics as "a giant of a man with a voice to match" following his performance in *Boris Godunov*. He passed away on May 28, 2022, at the age of 82. His legacy includes numerous recordings and performances across various genres, including opera, musicals, and chanson.
