Smith & Mighty

Smith & Mighty are pioneers of the Bristol sound—a genre-blending mix of dub, reggae, hip-hop, and electronic music that laid the groundwork for trip-hop in the late '80s and early '90s. Formed by Rob Smith and Ray Mighty, the duo gained early recognition for producing local artists and remixing classic tracks with a heavy, bass-driven twist. Their influence can be heard in the atmospheric grooves of acts like Massive Attack and Portishead, both of whom emerged from the same fertile Bristol scene.

Their 1995 debut album, Bass Is Maternal, remains a cult classic, showcasing their knack for moody beats, deep basslines, and genre-defying production. Over the years, they've stayed true to their roots while continuing to reinvent their sound, as heard in later releases like Big World Small World and the archival Ashley Road Sessions 88–94. With a legacy built on innovation and a DIY ethos, Smith & Mighty are often credited as unsung heroes of UK bass culture.
