Tunde Jegede

Tunde Jegede is a composer, cellist, and kora virtuoso who has an extensive background in both Western classical and African musical traditions, making him one of the few musicians in the world to inhabit these two distinct cultures simultaneously. Born in London in 1972 to Nigerian parents, he was exposed to a vibrant tapestry of sounds from a young age, ensuring a rich foundation in the music of both the Western and African worlds. His formative years were marked by significant studies; at the age of 10, he took up the cello, and by 11, he had begun learning the kora under the tutelage of the legendary Malian Griot, Amadu Bansang Jobarteh, in the Gambia.

Jegede's diverse compositions distinguish him for their depth and intricate fusion of classical and African influences, exploring the narratives of the African diaspora while deftly navigating the complexities of cultural identity. Throughout his celebrated career, he has been involved in numerous projects and collaborations that showcase his versatility, from the chamber ensemble compositions found in his album "Heritage" to the evocative pieces written for the original motion picture score of "Mami Wata". His albums, such as "The Emidy Project", pay homage to historical African figures and impart crucial stories through music. Undoubtedly, Jegede's work transcends mere performance, serving as a profound testament to the enduring and universal power of music to tell stories, evoke emotion, and connect diverse cultures.
