Protex

Protex is a seminal punk band hailing from Belfast, Northern Ireland, whose contributions to the genre have reverberated since their formation during the turbulence of the late 1970s. Originally consisting of members Aidan Murtagh (also known as Protex Blue), Dave McMaster, Paul Maxwell, and Owen McFadden, the group first captured attention with their raw energy and undeniable hook-filled melodies. A chance encounter with John Peel, a legendary BBC radio DJ known for promoting punk and new-wave bands, led to their first recording session, effectively kick-starting their musical journey.

Despite a hiatus during the 1980s and 1990s, Protex rebounded with a vengeance in the 21st century, fueled by the rediscovery of their early work by new generations of enthusiasts. They began performing again and bringing their music to a contemporary audience, resulting in a string of new releases that stayed true to their punk roots while exhibiting a matured sound. Albums like "Tightrope," "Strange Obsessions," and the single "Wicked Ways," showcase the band's undiminished ability to craft infectious power-pop tunes infused with punk's raw simplicity and vigor. Today, Protex stands as a testament to the enduring appeal of punk and the influence of their early contributions to its development.
