Azzolini studied music in Florence and Milan, where he honed his skills in harmony, composition, and arrangement. His career was marked by significant contributions to the jazz scene, as he was part of the original lineup of the Gianni Basso and Oscar Valdambrini Quintet starting in the mid-1950s. He led his own groups and was frequently invited to perform at major international jazz festivals.
Azzolini collaborated with some of the most celebrated jazz musicians, including Chet Baker, Billie Holiday, and Stéphane Grappelli.
