Gene Austin

Gene Austin was one of the most popular vocalists of the 1920s and 1930s, known for his smooth crooning style that helped pave the way for singers like Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra. Born in 1900, Austin found massive success with his 1927 recording of “My Blue Heaven,” which became one of the best-selling singles of its time. His intimate vocal technique helped shift popular music away from the more theatrical style of earlier decades and set the tone for modern pop balladry.

A pioneering recording artist, Gene Austin sold millions of records during the early days of commercial recording, and his easygoing charm made him a favorite on radio and in vaudeville. In addition to his singing career, Austin also dabbled in songwriting and acting. Though his fame eventually waned with the arrival of newer music styles, his influence on American pop and vocal jazz remains a significant chapter in the history of recorded music.
