The Shaggs were an American rock band formed in Fremont, New Hampshire, in the late 1960s by sisters Dorothy "Dot," Betty, and Helen Wiggin. The group was somewhat of a family project, driven by their father Austin Wiggin Jr., who believed it was their destiny to become rock stars. The Shaggs are best known for their 1969 album Philosophy of the World, which gained cult status years after its release due to its uniquely unpolished and unconventional musical style.
Initially met with confusion and derision, The Shaggs' music has since been embraced by fans of outsider music and appreciated for its raw, unfiltered charm. Their follow-up compilation, Shaggs' Own Thing, includes unreleased tracks and recordings that further showcase their distinct sound. While they never achieved mainstream success, The Shaggs have been cited as an influence by various avant-garde and alternative musicians and remain a fascinating footnote in rock history.
