Zsolt Hamar is a Hungarian conductor born in 1968 in Budapest. He began his musical journey at the age of six, studying piano, and later delved into composition at the Béla Bartók Conservatory. Hamar furthered his education at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music, where he studied composition with Emil Petrovics and conducting with Ervin Lukács and Tamás Gál. He graduated in 1995 with honors. Over the years, Hamar has won numerous prestigious conducting competitions, including the Portuguese Radio International Conductors' Competition in 1997 and the International Antonio Pedrotti Conductors' Competition in Trento. His career has been marked by appointments as the first permanent conductor of the Hungarian National Philharmonic Orchestra and as the music director of the Pannon Philharmonic Orchestra in Pécs. He has also worked extensively with international orchestras and opera houses, including the Zurich Opera and the Orchestra di Padova e del Veneto.
In recent years, Hamar has continued to build his reputation as a versatile conductor. He was General Music Director of the Hessian State Theatre in Wiesbaden from 2012 to 2016 and served as the Music Director of the National Philharmonic Orchestra in Hungary from 2017 to 2020. Starting from the 2022/2023 season, he took on the role of chief conductor at the Moravian Philharmonic Orchestra in Olomouc. Hamar's work has been recognized with the Liszt Award of the Hungarian Republic in 2003 and the Knight's Cross of the Order of the Hungarian Republic in 2006. He has recorded works by notable composers such as Liszt and Mahler.
