Ivan Julian is a guitarist, singer, songwriter, and producer who made his mark as a key figure in the New York punk scene of the 1970s. Best known as a founding member of the influential band Richard Hell and the Voidoids, Julian helped define the raw, edgy sound of early punk with his distinctive guitar work on the iconic album Blank Generation. His style combined ferocity with a sense of melodic experimentation that set him apart from many of his contemporaries.
Following his time with the Voidoids, Julian remained active in music, recording and performing with a wide range of artists including The Clash, Matthew Sweet, and Shriekback. He eventually launched a solo career, showcasing his versatility as a musician and songwriter. His solo releases, such as The Naked Flame and Swing Your Lanterns, feature a blend of punk, rock, and soulful grooves, proving that his creative energy remains as vital as ever.
