Soriah

Soriah is the artistic persona of Enrique Ugalde, a Portland-based experimental musician and ritual artist best known for his mastery of Tuvan throat singing—a rare and ancient vocal technique from the remote Siberian region of Tuva. Since the late 1990s, Soriah has immersed himself deeply in this tradition, studying with Tuvan masters and gaining recognition within that community, including awards such as “Best Foreigner” at the 2008 Üstüü-Khüree Festival and the title “Magical Musician of Khöömei” in 2020. His music is a striking blend that fuses these primal throat singing techniques with dark ambient, ritualistic soundscapes, and diverse world music influences, including Asian, African, and South American rhythms, often enriched with modern synthesizers. Over the years, Soriah has released numerous albums like *Eztica*, *Cathartes*, and *Gnostic*, showcasing his unique, haunting sonic world that bridges ancient traditions with contemporary experimentation.

Beyond his solo work, Enrique Ugalde is also active in Portland’s vibrant music scene, performing in cover bands and embracing roles beyond music, such as being a popular cab driver. His artistry is recognized internationally, and his deep respect for Tuvan culture has led to collaborations and a presence in Tuvan cultural institutions.
