Black Uhuru

Black Uhuru is one of the most influential reggae bands to come out of Jamaica, originally forming in the early 1970s in the Waterhouse district of Kingston. Known for their militant sound and deep roots vibes, the group helped pioneer the evolution of reggae music, especially through the 1980s. Black Uhuru was the first reggae band to win a Grammy Award in the Best Reggae Recording category, taking the honor in 1985 for their album Anthem. Over the years, the group went through several lineup changes, but founder Derrick "Duckie" Simpson has remained a constant presence, guiding the band's legacy forward.

Black Uhuru’s music is characterized by haunting harmonies, socially conscious lyrics, and the signature rhythm of Sly & Robbie, the powerhouse production duo who played a key role in shaping their sound. Tracks like “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner,” “Sinsemilla,” and “I See You” are staples in the reggae world, deeply respected by fans old and new. Even today, Black Uhuru continues to release new music and tour internationally, staying true to their roots while keeping their message and sound fresh for new generations.
