Altar

**Altar** emerged from the Netherlands' underground metal scene in the early '90s, carving a niche with their raw blend of death and doom metal. Known for their unflinching critiques of religion and authority, the band’s lyrics tackle existential angst and societal rebellion, mirrored in tracks like *Youth Against Christ* and *In the Name of the Father*. Their sound—a thick stew of crushing riffs, guttural vocals, and slow-burning atmospherics—has earned them cult status among fans of extreme metal.

After a hiatus, Altar resurfaced in 2014 with *Ego Art*, proving their abrasive energy hadn’t dimmed. Releases like *Red Harvest* and *Until Heaven Forbids* showcase their signature mix of brutality and bleak melody, while newer material continues to push their anti-establishment ethos. Though lineup shifts have occurred over the decades, Altar remains a defiant voice in metal’s shadowy corners, never compromising their confrontational spirit.
