School of Language is the solo project of David Brewis, a musician known for his intricacies in indie rock and for being one-half of the critically acclaimed band Field Music, which he formed with his brother Peter Brewis. The project was conceived during a period when Field Music had been put on hiatus, allowing David to explore his individual musical pursuits. School of Language is characterized by a playful exploration of rhythm and melody, coupled with introspective and often incisive lyrics.
With the release of School of Language's debut album, "Sea From Shore," in 2008, David set the tone for a project that would weave through the realms of experimental pop and indie rock. Embellishing his sound with layered vocals, complex guitar work, and off-kilter pop sensibilities, he continued to expand his discography with records including 2014's "Old Fears," a collection of funky, synth-laden songs that examined the nature of fear and personal change. This was followed by the politically charged "45," released in 2019, which served as a sharp critique of contemporary politics, particularly in the age of Donald Trump. Throughout these releases and others like the charged "Poor Boy EP" and the contemplative single "More Fears," School of Language maintains a distinct voice in the modern music landscape, offering a blend of reflective storytelling and inventive music that defies easy categorization.
