Benjamín "Chamín" Correa was a revered Mexican guitarist known primarily for his skill in playing romantic ballads and bolero music. Born on December 4, 1929, in Mexico City, Correa became a prominent figure in the Latin music scene for his delicate and expressive guitar playing. As one-third of the legendary trio "Los Tres Caballeros," alongside Roberto Cantoral and Leonel Gálvez, he captivated audiences in the 1950s and 60s with his masterful interpretations of boleros—a genre that has been the cornerstone of romantic Latin music.
After the trio went their separate ways, Chamin Correa continued to enjoy a successful career as a solo artist and sideman. His reputation as "El Requinto de Oro" (The Golden Requinto) was well-earned thanks to his distinctive playing of the requinto guitar, a smaller, higher-pitched relative of the classical guitar often used in Mexican trios for melodic and harmonic enhancements. Correa's discography is extensive, with numerous albums dedicated to the romantic sounds of his guitar. Albums like "Cuerdas, Amor y Guitarras" and "Al Compás Del Bolero" showcase the breadth of his talent and his devotion to romantic Latin music. Before his death on January 14, 2020, Chamin Correa had also been a sought-after producer and mentor to young guitarists, ensuring his influence would resonate in the music world for years to come.
