Josephine Lang

Josephine Lang (1815–1880) was a German composer and singer best known for her art songs (Lieder). A gifted songwriter from a young age, she became admired in 19th‑century musical circles for her knack for shaping direct, expressive vocal melodies and pairing them with sensitive, text-driven piano writing—music that sits comfortably alongside the broader German Lied tradition of her era.

Much of Lang’s output centers on songs, many of which were published in collections during her lifetime and continue to be rediscovered today through new editions and arrangements. In recent years, performers have increasingly brought her music back to the stage and recording studio, highlighting both her lyrical gift and the emotional range in her settings of German poetry.
